The colon houses trillions of bacteria that protect our gut and produce vitamins. The bacteria in the colon produce substantial amounts of vitamins by fermentation. Vitamin K and B vitamins, including biotin, are produced by the colonic bacteria. These vitamins are then absorbed into the blood.
The function of the large intestine (colon) is to get rid of food left over after the nutrients are removed from it, bacteria and other waste. This process is called peristalsis and can take around 36 hours, according to the Cleveland Clinic. The colon consists of four parts: descending colon, ascending colon, transverse colon, and sigmoid colon.
First, liquid and salt is removed from the waste as it passes through the colon. Then, the waste makes its way to the sigmoid, where it is stored. Once or twice per day, when the body is ready for a bowel movement, the waste is dumped into the rectum.
The colon is the body's sewer system. If not properly treated and cleansed, it can accumulate toxic poisons, which are then absorbed into the blood stream. These toxins travel through the blood stream and are then deposited into the body's tissues, causing cell destruction, which can lead to many diseases.
The colon depends on fiber in order to function correctly. Lack of fiber in the modern diet is one of the main cause of intestinal diseases; years of poor diet lead to bowel problems. It is believed that most people have between 3 to 15 pounds of waste in their colon. Colon cancer is one of the leading cancers that is killing Americans; it accounts for about 56,000 deaths per year.
Constipation occurs when bowel movements become less frequent and stools become difficult to pass.
Common lifestyle causes of constipation include:
Eating foods low in fiber. Not drinking enough water (dehydration). Not getting enough exercise. Changes in your regular routine, such as traveling or eating or going to bed at different times. We should have a bowel movement at least three times a day. Most of us have one or less bowel movement a day. Modern medicine tells us having a bowel movement once a day is not necessary for good health, this could not be farther from the truth.
In 1981, a study published in The Lancet stated that women who have less than three bowel movements per week, increase their risk by four times to develop breast cancer. Think about it, if a baby had a bowel movement every other day you would think something was wrong. Proper elimination is necessary to avoid a buildup of toxins in the body, a condition that can lead to chronic inflammatory/autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, ankylosing spondylitis, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis and cancer. Improper elimination may cause a state of toxemia in which toxins are leaked back into the blood stream. As well, a clogged colon will eventually affect the whole body and lead to conditions where disease will develop throughout the body.
